I’ve been playing music from a wonderful collection composed by William Mahan: Dreams of Ireland. I learned the pieces a number of years ago and they are favorites for an evening’s “end of practicing” selection or Sunday afternoon to entertain guests.
It’s terribly hard to pick a favorite song, but my two favorites in this collection are I Want To Go With You and Song From A Hymn. I Want To Go With You echoes a romantic longing in a hauntingly beautiful melody. Song From A Hymn is a lovely arrangement; simple, but easy to add improvisation if the occasion calls for a few more notes.
If you play the entire collection in one performance or practice session, you’ll notice some common themes and sounds echoing throughout the different pieces. It’s a nice way to tie the entire collection together and lets each song build on the previous ones.
You can find Dreams of Ireland by William Mahan at Melody’s Traditional Music & Harp Shoppe.
Happy practicing and performing!
